On November 23rd and 24th, 2011, Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector hosted the workshop “Innovative Environmental Technologies – An Opportunity for the Danube Region” in the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart together with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance and Economics, Baden-Württemberg International and the Environmental Technologies Platform. Building upon the “Knowledge Transfer” workshop that took place in June, 2011, as part of Baden-Württemberg’s kick-off event for the EU’s Danube region strategy, the goal of this workshop was to promote the establishment of an environmental technology network. Environmental protection is a key aspect of the Danube strategy. Establishing an environmental technology network brings with it an opportunity to make sustainable improvements to environmental conditions in the entire Danube region. At the same time, this raises prospects for innovation and economic development.

Some 70 persons from a total of eight Danube countries took part, among them representatives from ministries, public administration, consulates, businesses, agencies and industry associations. They set forth their top priorities in environmental technology and described their administrative structures, in this way laying the foundation for the environmental technology network.

During expert presentations on the topics of waste management, sewage treatment and energy efficiency, the participants were informed about waste management planning, developments in sewage treatment technology, and technologies for energy-efficient construction and modernisation. Besides this, the participants used the opportunity for networking and an in-depth exchange of ideas. In his closing statement, Minister Untersteller emphasised that a strategic network of businesses, research institutions and administrative authorities presents a unique opportunity to spread innovative environmental technologies throughout the Danube region. The event was rounded off by on-site inspections on the second day. This gave the participants the opportunity to tour three projects in the region implementing innovative strategies in safe disposal, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability: the waste-to-energy plant in Böblingen-Sindelfingen, the sewage treatment facility in Böblingen-Sindelfingen and the Scharnhauser Park.
