Air
The quality of air can be measured and evaluated on the basis of uniform European air quality standards. The Landesanstalt für Umwelt, Messungen und Naturschutz (LUBW) [State Agency for Environment, Measurements and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg] has established three regional monitoring networks. The fully automatic air measurement network continually measures the concentration of the relevant types of air pollution and is the basic source of up-to-date information for the media. The task of the spot metering network is to document areas which are prone to excessive traffic emissions in towns and cities. The deposition measurement network records depositions of air pollutants in specific major conurbations and natural areas. Emissions from all relevant sources (such as traffic, small firing installations, industry and business) have been recorded and regularly updated in the air pollutant emission register for the whole of Baden-Württemberg since 1995. The register records all important air pollutants, such as oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, benzene and greenhouse gases. All in all there is therefore a comprehensive set of tools available to support the implementation of a purposeful and technically sound clean air policy.
Emissions from plant, machinery and equipment are subject to statutory regulation, approved ceilings and operational monitoring.
